Global Yacht Race - Clipper 11-12

August 4, 2011

It is the first time since 2004 that a round the world yacht race has started from the iconic sailing ground of the Solent.

As the warm, bright weather continued and the tension was starting to grow, Town Quay Marina welcomed the 60ft Clipper Training yacht to one of it berths over the weekend during the build up to the race.

Hundreds of spectators gave the global yacht race Clipper 11-12 a rousing send-off from Town Quay on Sunday 31st July.

Following the Royal Navy's carrier HMS Illustrious, a flotilla of smaller boats, including berth holders of Town Quay Marina, accompanied the racing fleet out of the Solent at the start of their 12-month, round the world journey.

Made up largely of amateurs 40% of whom had never sailed before, they will be hoping the winds pick up soon if they are to make their next landfall of Quinta do Lorde Marina in Madeira by 10th August.

We wish all the competitors the very best of luck in their 40,000 mile journey, the sailing equivalent of climbing Mount Everest.
